Grit: What Is It?

Angela Duckworth digs deep into the topic of grit in her New York Times bestseller GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Sharing her research into grit, she dispels any myth that pure talent or random luck are the keys to success. Instead, Duckworth states clearly that grit is foundational to success and shares scientific evidence that grit can grow over time. Her writing and research radically changed my perspectives on achievement.

So what exactly is “grit?” Better yet, how do you know it when you see it?

Ever since Chris Cathers and I launched the Grit Meets Growth podcast, grit has been top-of-mind for me. Specifically, I’ve been working to define what it is for myself. Part of that has included reading Duckworth’s research. My “grit journey” has also led me to have a lot of conversations about the topic. If you’re going to include it in the name of your podcast or talk about it, then you had better understand it.

That’s why I’m coming to you today. I’m doing my own research on grit, and I want to hear from you. I have three simple, anonymous questions to ask:

  1. How would you define grit?
  2. What’s the connection between grit and growth?
  3. What’s a real-world example of grit have you witnessed or experienced?

You can share your responses at this link.

I’m looking forward to what gets revealed here and sharing it in future posts and on the podcast so we can all frame up our own definitions of grit. Until then, thanks for taking the time to be part of this journey with me…
